Who is Abdul Rahman, The Prince Among Slaves?

Abdul Rahman. The Prince Among Slaves.

Alfa Abdul-Rahman

Having Power Ripped Away

Abdul Rahman was Prince of Futa Jallon, Africa. His father was the king. He had a wife and a child and was a military leader. He had it all until one day he had it all taken away. An enemy tribe attacked him and his army and they were almost all killed and the ones that weren't were bought by slave traders in England. They had to walk 100 miles barefoot to the slave ship that would take them to America. They were sold for guns, gun powder, tobacco, and rum. After that day, he lost everything he ever had and wanted.

Thomas Foster

Thomas Foster is a business man, a slave holder, religious minded and ambitious. He is also from South Carolina. Abdul Rahman and one other man were eventually bought by Thomas Foster for 930 pesos. They were brought to where Thomas lived in Nachez, Mississippi.

It's Hard to Survive on Your Own

Abdul did successful escape from Thomas Foster. He ran into the woods and tried to make his way back to Futa Jallon. But one day he realized that he was no longer a prince or a warrior. He was just a slave. He realized that God's plan for him was to be a slave and returning to Futa Jallon was not part of it. He eventually returned to Thomas Foster and his plantation and he was not beat. He was left alone because he made the choice to return. Thomas Foster then took advantage of Abdul's knowledge on cotton. He made lots of money from this. He produced almost sixteen thousand pounds of cotton in his first year thanks to Abdul.

Freedom Is Tough

Eventually, Abdul was freed for no cost by Foster. The only thing he had to do was leave the United States of America because Foster did not want him to enjoy his freedom there. Abdul was thrilled but then realized he was going to have to leave his whole family behind. During his time in Mississippi, he had remarried to a woman named Isabel and had nine kids with her. He was the only one who had been set free. He had enough money to buy Isabel but didn't have any to buy his children. Isabel and Abdul made it their mission to set each other their children free before returning to Africa. However, in the time they were allotted, they only made half of what they needed so they did't get to buy any of the kids. Even though Abdul did get his freedom in the end, he had to leave his kids behind which was heartbreaking to him and was worse than being free.

Andrew Jackson: Twenty Dollar Bill

Andrew Jackson should be replaced on the twenty dollar bill. I think the he should be considered King Andrew I. Although white men liked him, he was not that popular with others. He only did what was good for himself and the ones that supported him which is not something that we should be looking up to and praising. He was very selfish and I think that is why he should be removed from the twenty dollar bill.

Jackson was a military leader before becoming president of the United States. He led the Americans to their most surprising victory and he gained lots of land for the U.S. He also founded the democratic party which is why he is so popular among white men. He was the champion of democracy according to them. White men could vote during election and even though only they could vote, it was still a step in the right direction for our country today. They also knew that he had saved the country so they thought that he was a hero. People(Common white men) were ecstatic when he was voted to be the president. However, African Americans and Indians were not too happy about it. Although Jackson got endless support from the white men, he was not supported by most African Americans and Indians.

The Indians and Jackson did not get along at all. Jackson had forced them out of the Cherokee land. He thought that because the Cherokees weren't a nation that they couldn't live in Georgia because it's apart of the U.S. land. Jackson and his people wanted to live there and build houses. However, the case was brought to the supreme court and they said that the Cherokee owned the land and didn't have to give it to Jackson. But that didn't stop Jackson. He kicked them out and told them that he is their great white father and is doing what's best for them. But that certainly was not the best for the Cherokee. The Indians then walked the Trial of Tears where more than four thousand people died. The causes were smallpox, cholera, not enough food, water, or medicine, and they were walking in the winter to Oklahoma which was 850 miles away from where they started. The Indians tried to make Jackson happy before he kicked them out by adapting white life like sewing, farming, dressing like whites, and speaking the English language. But it wasn't enough. They then made a constitution to try to persuade Jackson to repeal the Indian Removal but that also didn't work. Jackson killed thousands of innocent people by making them move to a different place for no reason and he didn't care because he was a selfish man.

Jackson played a role in both the patronage and spoil system. They are both very similar but he played an enormous part in the spoil system. Patronage is giving people jobs in the government who are fit for them and the spoil system is giving a government job to someone who you pick even if they aren't fit for the job. Jackson said that he would give the government jobs to whoever was best suited for it. He said that they should have intelligence and experience to take it and that no man would have more rights to a job than another. This would be patronage which everyone wants. Everyone thought that he would go by his word, but he didn't. In one instance, Jackson hired a man with criminal tendencies, Swartwout, just because he was an early supporter of Jackson. He didn't listen to people when they told him it was a bad idea. He never knew what a mistake he made hiring Swartwout until he stole over one million dollars from the government. Although Jackson claimed he was going be patronage, he mostly used the spoil system to give out government jobs which people were not happy about.

Although Jackson might be seen as a hero to some people, he was a villain to most. He was an extremely selfish person who only cared about himself and the people that supported him through his lifetime. Because of the way he was he should be replaced on the twenty dollar bill. We should not be reminded of someone who did not care about every person in his country daily. That's not something our country should be proud of and that is why I think his place on the twenty dollar bill should be taken away from him.

Revolutions of 1830 and 1848

1. During the Revolutions of 1830 and 1848, France got what they wanted. They wanted a constitution that would provide fair rights for them and that's what they got. They wanted a democracy. They didn't want to be bossed around by someone anymore and they wanted to have their own rights. My group studied the Polish revolution and we had to explain if it was successful or unsuccessful.

2. In our project, the main question that was supposed to be answered was " Were the Revolutions of 1830 and 1848 really failures as historians have concluded or should they receive some credit for progress in the long struggle toward greater democracy?" I think that the revolutions were successful in their attempts even though some of it didn't go they way that they wanted it to like Poland. Poland wanted to have independence and control of their land. Russia, Prussia, and Austria were the countries that were controlling Poland. When they went to fight, most of the Poles didn't support fighting the three big powers that they were taking on so Poland didn't get much support from their country which made it difficult to fight. They ultimately lost which was a part of the revolutions that was unsuccessful. The Revolution of 1830 was very successful. They wanted to overthrow their king and vote in a new one which they did. They also wanted a democracy and a new constitution which they got both of those too. They wanted to have freedom of speech and rights and that's exactly what they got which is why this revolution is such a big success. The Revolution of 1848 was a success and a failure. They wanted Louis Phillppe out because the economy was't doing too good and they thought it was his fault. Once he fled, everything was getting a little bit better but then as a country they voted in Louis Napoleon which was a bad idea. He was fine at first but after a while he reinstated absolute monarchy which was the biggest failure of this revolution because they worked so hard to get a democracy.

Communism and Socialism

In class, we did an activity with Hershey Kisses and rock papers scissors. The purpose of this lesson was to show how the government worked in that time.If you won the game then you got one of the other persons Hershey Kisses but if you lost you had to give one to the person you lost to. I thought the activity was fun but that was because I kept winning rock paper scissors and getting more chocolate.I can see why it could've been frustrating thought because if you kept loosing then you would eventually loose all your candy and you couldn't continue in the game anymore.

Karl Marx and Adam Smith both wanted to help the poor but they both had different theories of doing it. Karl Marx wanted everyone to be equal. He wanted everyone to have the same amount of money, the same amount of things, the same amount of everything. He believed in communism which meant that everyone had the same things and no one was rich or poor and the government took control. Adam Smith was also very concerned about the poor. However, he thought that if the government stayed out of it, people will be able to sell and trade freely and it'll be more beneficial for everyone. His theory was called the invisible hand which supported socialism. Karl Marx believed in a Utopian society and Adam Smith believed in everyone being able to do their own thing.

In my opinion, I think that the invisible hand is the best theory. It's a better way to help the poor then to take things away from the rich when that's not fair to them. This way the poor can make more money on their own. I don't think that socialism is a good theory because there's no possible way to make a Utopian society work. You can't force people to all live the same way. I don't think there's a third alternate. I honestly think that the invisible hand is the best way to help the poor and the society in general.

Socratic Seminar Reflection

Three points that I brought up in the Socratic Seminar was how the children were separated from their families, how the work environments damaged the children mentally and physically, and how unsafe the working environments are.

Three points that other people brought up that I found important were that even though the working conditions aren't safe for the children, they still are being fed and have a place to sleep. Even though the parents knew how bad child labor is, the children didn't know so they weren't aware of how bad it was going to be for them until they started working. Finally, someone said that some families needed the money so bad that the kids needed to work so it wasn't really an option for them.

I think that our group did a good job of finding the reasons as to why child labor is so bad and I think that the opinion we had were good especially using specific evidence from the readings. I think that next time we can use more details from the readings to back up our points and I think that we can organize our thoughts a little more instead of saying something that doesn't relate to the point that was just made.

In 1700, the British income per person was $333. In 1760, the income per person was $399. This means that over a 60 year time period the income per person increased $66. Also, in 1800, the income per person was $427. In 1830, the income was $498. This means that money was increasing faster than before because over just a 30 year time period, the income increased $71. Finally, in 1830, the average income per person was $498 and in 1868 the average income was $804. This shows that the income kept improving more and more every year as it improved by $306 in just 30 years.

This report dated September 15, 1846 has been provided for the urban planning committees of various cities in England. My name is Taylor Perillo, and as a mid-level city inspector I trust that you will use the information within to determine appropriate needs in urban planning for your municipalities. My report has been through as I have made use of all the sources available to me and have worked to guide you through my own analysis and critical thinking to a full description of the issues facing our cities.

As I have seen the factories, I can determine the outcomes that impacted life in the industrial revolution positively. They had gorgeous palaces and a splendid scene. There was a great mart of trade and the owners are friendly. The owners were understanding and employed most of the people that needed or asked for jobs.  (Doc B.) The working conditions weren’t that bad in these certain factories. They got many intervals of rest so they weren’t working constantly for hours. (Doc E.) Some of the places where the workers worked were good, safe environments for them to work in and get paid enough money to survive.

Although there were positive working environments, mostly all of the environments were very bad for the workers. They were so close to each other that is was hard to breathe. There was tons of child labor and the factories had fires.(Doc C.) The pollution was also very very bad especially for everyone's health.(Doc D.) There was a river that turned purple because of the color that was put into cotton but this happened with every dye they used. The rivers would turn red, blue, purple, and any color they used to dye.(Doc A.)  There was also no food for the workers and it wasn't easy to get jobs in some places. (Doc E.)  It was very hard to find jobs for some people and when they did find a job or the people who did have a job worked in mostly negative places that were very unsafe.

Overall, I believe that the industrialization revolution had a negative impact on living and the working conditions. The health of people was so bad that they’re getting ill and getting injuries that cause them to lose their jobs. There was also lots of child labor that cause the children’s life to be shorter than they should be. I think that industrialization cause a very negative atmosphere for people and it was very hard for people to work and live because it was such a negative place.
